Mago Video Corp

Very little is known about the company "Mago Video Corp" outside of what is printed on the video covers. (see above ) The back of the box indicates that they are out of New Jersey. The videos were released in the mid 80's in the US. Marketed mainly to Spanish immigrants in the hey-day of VCR's it would seem that they produced over a hundred or so movies on home video. All are Spanish language latino culture films. The majority of which are from Spain. This month the Sideshowvideo blog chronicles some of the most sought after and collectible Mago videos. Most of which rarely appear on the Internet. The post don't place the films in any specific order. I grouped videos of specific directors like Jess Franco consecutively. The labels attached to each post will group similar videos. These videos are extremely difficult to find. The majority are still NOT available on DVD.

USA Spanish Language VHS Release by Mago Home Video of Jess Franco ( jesus franco) infamous thriller from Spain. Pic is of Mago video cover.
Stars: Lina Romay Antonio Mayans Directed by: Jess Franco. Also stars Howard Vernon and Juan Soler. This is the second of two Jess Franco films release by Mago Home video in the US to the Spanish market. The other is listed in the previous post Sola Ante El Terror. Both are Mundial films from Spain with Lina Romay and Antonio Mayans in the lead roles. This video release is in Spanish language only, without subtitles. The video cover design stays true to the original poster art for the film.
Synopsis: Espionage Thriller -- Several International spy's mistakenly believe the Paquita a cabaret singer is a spy who is planning to meet a German scientist who has escaped from Russia.
Overall a poor blend of thriller and horror genres. Not Jess Franco's strongest work by any means. Lacks his distinct production style from earlier work with just the slow-pace and confusing dialouge left to fast forward through. The picture quality on this release is sufficient but by no means as good as the average Mago Home Video.

Sola Ante El Terror - Mago US VHS

Mago Video presented mostly films from Spain on VHS in the US. The majority were light hearted sex comedies and Spanish dramas. This rare treat is an exception. One of two Mago videos of Jess Franco films. The other being Sangre en mis Zapatos.
Sola Ante el Terror features Jess Franco regulars Lina Romay and Antonio Mayans. Unfortunately this was not a great presentation of this lesser-known thriller from the 80's. Both the sound quality and and picture are of poorer quality than the typical Mago VHS release. The credits on the back cover and the run time are inaccurate. So buyer beware.
This muddled thriller deals with a bizarre family that plots to drive a young girl crazy in order to gain her inheritance. ( sound familiar?)
Still a favorite amongst Euro Trash video enthusiasts. But Franco fans should look elsewhere for more high-grade smut from this infamous and prolific Spanish director.

Necrophagus - Mago VHS - Graveyard of Horror

NECROPHAGUS aka Graveyard of Horror aka The Butcher of Binbrook- 1971 - Spain - Spanish Horror - Released by Mago Video in Spanish in the US and ALL- American Video in English Dubbed version.
Stars: Bill Curran, Frank Brana, and Catherine Ellison. The Mago VHS Release is definitely C-Grade. Both sound and picture are sub-par. In fact the movie it self is one big let down.
It doesn't live up to its awesome cover design by any means.
Best left to horror fans scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Carmen Sevilla stars as a sexy historian and book worm who tries to tame the uneducated and womanizing fashion photographer played by Jose Rubio .
Both characters end up getting a complete make over.
Directed by Agustin Navarro during the heavily censored days of Spain film studios. Sexy comedies such as these had to resort to lots of leg shots and foggy shower scenes in which to feature their leading ladies.
Here the gorgeous Carmen Sevilla does extremely well considering her shapely legs and busty cleavage.
Video Notes:
The picture quality on this Mago video release is brilliant. All around it is an above average battle of the sexes comedy. If you ever get a chance to see it look for a Mirta Miller cameo in the opening sequence.

TRAMPA INOCENTE - Mago USA VHs Venezuela Film

TRAMPA INOCENTE - 1978
Hilda Vera stars in this extremely obscure film released on Mago Video in the US. She also starred in the more famous Venezuela film Pez Que Fuma ( the smoking fish) from director Roman Chalbaud. Pez Que Fuma was also released by Mago.The plot concerns a young orphan in small village who seeks revenge against the men that raped her.
I'm not too familiar with the film but always loved the striking cover design.
